Numbness and Tingling in Your Hands: What It Might Mean

Reviewed by Dr. Dustin Dukart, DC

Hands that fall asleep at night, tingling fingers on the drive to work, a pins-and-needles patch that comes and goes — it’s a common complaint with several different causes, and which one you have changes what actually helps.

One quick self-check: numbness that reaches into the palm points more toward a neck source; numbness that stays in the fingers points more toward the wrist. It takes an exam to be sure, but it’s a useful first clue.

The Common Causes, and How They Differ

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome — the median nerve compressed at the wrist. Classic pattern: thumb, index, and middle fingers; worse at night; you shake the hand to “wake it up.” More on carpal tunnel.
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome — the ulnar nerve compressed at the elbow. Pattern: the ring and little fingers; worse with the elbow bent (phone, sleeping with a folded arm).
  • Cervical radiculopathy — a nerve root irritated in the neck, often from a disc or arthritic changes. Pattern: numbness that follows a stripe down the arm into specific fingers, sometimes with neck or shoulder-blade pain, and it can change with neck position.
  • Simple overuse — long stretches of typing or gripping can leave the forearm and hand achy and buzzy without true nerve compression. More on repetitive strain.
  • Systemic causes — diabetes, thyroid problems, and vitamin B12 deficiency can all cause hand numbness, usually in both hands and often the feet too.

When to See a Physician First

Get a medical work-up rather than starting conservative care if you have numbness in both hands, numbness that is steadily spreading or getting worse, visible muscle wasting or weakness (dropping things, a weak grip or pinch), numbness with a rash or joint swelling, or hand numbness that came on suddenly along with face or leg symptoms, trouble speaking, or vision changes — that last combination is a reason to call 911.

Sorting Out Your Hand Symptoms

An exam here tests specifically to tell these apart before starting any plan. Most new patients are seen within a few days.
