Is It Safe to See a Chiropractor While Pregnant?

Reviewed by Dr. Dustin Dukart, DC

For the low back pain and deep pelvic ache that come with a growing belly and a shifting center of gravity, gentle, pregnancy-adapted chiropractic care is generally considered a reasonable option — with a few real caveats worth understanding first.

One myth to clear up first: there’s no controlled evidence that chiropractic care turns a breech baby. We work the SI joints and round ligaments to ease pelvic tension for comfort — not as a breech treatment. See below.

What “Pregnancy-Adapted” Actually Means

It means no forceful twisting of the abdomen or low back, positioning that accommodates a growing belly (side-lying, a pregnancy pillow or table cushion), lighter force overall, and a focus on easing tension through the pelvis, hips, and low back rather than aggressive joint work. ACOG notes that for back pain in pregnancy, staying active, using support, and physical therapy are all reasonable — and gentle hands-on care fits alongside those, coordinated with your OB or midwife rather than around them.

What the Evidence Shows

It’s real but limited. A systematic review of chiropractic care for pregnancy-related low back and pelvic girdle pain found the evidence “moderate or unclear but favorable,” held back mostly by small, lower-quality studies. A broader Cochrane review found that exercise programs help, and did not find high-quality evidence for spinal manipulation on its own. So the honest framing is: a gentle plan combining hands-on care, exercise, and practical day-to-day adjustments can help with the discomfort — it isn’t a guarantee, and we’ll tell you if it isn’t working.

When to Call Your OB or Midwife Instead

Contact your maternity provider or seek urgent care — not a chiropractic visit — for any of these during pregnancy:

  • Vaginal bleeding or fluid leakage
  • Regular or painful contractions before term
  • Severe or sudden abdominal pain, or pain with fever
  • A noticeable decrease in the baby’s movements
  • Severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling
  • Calf pain, redness, or swelling in one leg

A Note on Breech Positioning

You’ll see claims that chiropractic care turns a breech baby. There is no controlled evidence that it does. We work the SI joints and round ligaments to ease pelvic tension for comfort — not as a breech treatment. If your baby is breech, that’s a conversation for your OB or midwife about options with real evidence behind them.
