Chiropractor discussing a care plan honestly with a patient — Saint Paul Park MN

What to Expect

How Many Chiropractic Visits Will I Actually Need?

Reviewed by Dr. Dustin Dukart, DC

It’s a fair question to ask before you start, and you should be wary of any clinic that answers it with a big number and a prepaid package on the first day. Here’s how to think about it.

No fixed number, by design: a sound plan agrees on a short initial block (often a few visits over 2–4 weeks), then reassesses. If you’re improving, care tapers as exercise takes over. If nothing’s changed, the answer is re-examine or refer — never “buy more of the same.”

There’s No Fixed Number — and That’s the Honest Answer

How many visits it takes depends on what the problem is, how long it’s been going on, and how your body responds to the first few sessions. A recent, uncomplicated episode — you tweaked your back lifting something a week ago — often settles in a handful of visits over two to four weeks. Something that’s been building for years tends to take longer and usually needs an exercise component to hold the gains. Clinical guidelines for low back pain from the American College of Physicians and the UK’s NICE both frame manual therapy the same way: a time-limited course of care, combined with exercise and self-management — not an open-ended commitment.

What a Reasonable Plan Looks Like

A sound approach is to agree on a short initial block of visits — often somewhere in the range of a few over two to four weeks — and then reassess. If you’re clearly improving, care tapers off as you take over more of it with exercise. If there’s been no meaningful change after that first block, the answer isn’t “buy more of the same” — it’s to re-examine, adjust the approach, or refer you to someone else. That reassessment point is the part that matters, and it’s what separates evidence-based care from a subscription.

What About “Maintenance” Visits?

Some people, once they’re better, choose to come in occasionally — every few weeks or when a familiar problem starts to flare — because they find it helps them stay active. That’s a personal call, and it can be reasonable. What isn’t reasonable is being told you must keep coming indefinitely to avoid catastrophe. The evidence for long-term scheduled visits in people who feel fine is limited, and we won’t pressure you into them. Our membership option exists for people who actively want that cadence, not as a default everyone is funneled into.

Signs You Need a Different Kind of Care, Not More Visits

Contact your physician rather than booking another chiropractic visit if you have:

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness that’s spreading or getting worse
  • Any loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area
  • Pain that’s severe, constant, and worse at night, or unexplained weight loss or fever alongside it
  • Pain from a significant injury (a fall, a crash) that hasn’t been evaluated

How We Handle It

At the exam you’ll get a realistic estimate for your specific situation and a clear checkpoint for when we’ll step back and look at whether it’s working — not a fixed package sold up front. If it’s not the right treatment for you, we’d rather tell you that early.
